Williams umbrella gesture touching proof of Kates importance, expert claims

Prince William's public gesture was the "touching proof" that his bond with Kate Middleton remains strong after being together for years, a royal expert said.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridges attended the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on Monday, March 14, alongside Prince Charles and Camilla.

As they stepped outside to meet the public after the service, William pulled out an umbrella when he noticed the rain start coming down.

Video shared by Westminster Abbey shows him turning around to an aide and asking for the umbrella.

He then walks back towards Kate and shields her from the rain while she carries on greeting members of the public.

Royal expert Daniela Elser, who writes for news.com.au, said the moment "perfectly reveals in only three seconds – that William instinctively understands that Kate is the secret to his future regal success".

She added: "This is all clearly touching proof that their union is still going gangbusters after more than a decade, three children, three house moves, two dogs and that time Kate flirted with a fringe.

"What instances like the Great Umbrella Moment of 2022 reveal is that William is not only aware of this, but also astutely embraces the status quo.

"He might have the blood of centuries worth of sovereigns flowing in his veins but it is Kate, a descendant of coal miners and self-made entrepreneurs, who will be key to the monarchy’s survival."

During the service, Kate was spotted showing a "huge act of inconvenience" when she greeted her step mother-in-law Camilla.

Body language expert Judi James said she was "keen to register affection" to the "woman who will be on the throne before her".

She also pointed out the awkward encounter between Kate and Meghan Markle at Commonwealth Day service in 2020 when the pair greeted each other in front of the guests.

Meghan's smile "vanished" and the pair showed no performances of fond rapport, she added.
