La Palma volcano spews lava as it continues to erupt

Thousands of people have been evacuated following the eruption and hundreds of homes have been destroyed.

No injuries have so far been reported.

La Palma’s airport has also been closed due to clouds of volcanic ash creating visibility issues.

The Canary Islands Government has announced financial aid for those who have lost their homes due to the disaster.


4 neighbourhoods in lockdown

With the possiblity of lava from the volcano reaching the sea in the next few hours and thus emitting toxic gases, 4 neabry areas have been ordered in to lockdown.

Residents of San Borondón, Marina Alta, Marina Baja and La Condesa msut stay inside their homes with doors and windows closed until further notice. 

514 homes destroyed and more than 20km of road affected

The latest data from the Copernicus satellite shows that 514 buildings have been destroyed by the volcano and 20.5km of road have been affected.
