Ghastly half-naked corpse washes up near mega-rich celeb hotspot

A half-naked corpse washed up on the shore of a luxury Hamptons enclave on Monday morning (August 8), leaving holiday-makers horrified.

The body of Keith Viagas, 63, was first spotted by kayakers on the shore of Sag Harbor Cove, an exclusive spot in New York State where the likes of Billy Joel and Richard Gere own homes.

One witness told Page Six: "He was nude apart from a black shirt around his neck, black socks or swim booties on.

"It was a ghastly sight to stumble across on a beautiful August summer morning."

Mr Viagas, originally from Franklin Square, New York, was a resident of the swanky area before his unexplained death.

He had been an employee of the Opera Orchestra of New York after serving as director of artistic planning at the New York City Opera, having studied at the prestigious Julliard School before moving on to Stony Brook University.

It is understood he hadn't been seen for a few days before his body washed up on the beach, but nobody suspected that he might be in danger.

Southampton Police Lieutenant Susan C. Ralph told The New York Post: "He’s a long-term resident but he was not reported missing because he would commonly go away for a couple of days then return."

The cause of death is currently unknown and will be determined by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office.

Police don’t suspect foul play.

Sag Harbor is a well-known celeb getaway, with ultra-wealthy New Yorkers regularly rubbing shoulders with A-list celebs, from Real Housewives Luann de Lesseps and Jill Zarin to co-host of long-standing American talk show The View Joy Behar, and even disgraced former news anchor Matt Lauer.

Even the Kardashians stayed nearby during the 2014 Keeping Up With The Kardashians spin-off, Kourtney & Khloe Take The Hamptons, taking up residence in a house that was reportedly rented by Rihanna at a sky-high rate of $415,000 per month.
